William M. DeMayo, MD

Dr. DeMayo has 35+ years of clinical experience in the field of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He has served as Medical Director for several comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation units and, for most of his career, has also maintained an active outpatient practice. Areas of special interest have included Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, Polio, Charcot Marie Tooth, musculoskeletal/neuropathic pain management and bracing.

Biography

Education:

  • Dr. DeMayo graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston College and received his M.D. degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1986.

  • He completed his internship at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh and then returned to Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City for three years of residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

  • Academically, Dr. DeMayo has been a past clinical instructor for the Yale School of Medicine and Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

  • In his early years of practice, he managed bracing clinics that cared for many polio survivors.

  • He served as Medical Director for a busy Spinal Cord Injury Program in Connecticut for six years before being recruited to Johnstown to open up the Crichton Center for Advanced Rehabilitation.

  • After moving to Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1996, he managed a comprehensive post-polio clinic at the John P. Murtha Neuroscience and Pain Institute.

  • He transitioned into private practice in 2002 and continued to do part-time work with the John P. Murtha Neuroscience and Pain Institute.

  • In September 2017 Dr. DeMayo accepted a unique opportunity with Capital Health, as the Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Abu Dhabi, developing their first purpose-built inpatient rehabilitation hospital. This Specialized Rehabilitation Hospital (www.srh.ae) is a model of care for the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region.

  • He has served on the Board of Directors of Post-Polio Health International. ​
